Program Description

This program stands out as one of a handful that has a focus on Education and also one of the few that includes a strong service-learning component. The topic of youth identity and education is one that impacts every country worldwide; this is especially the case for Europe because of its t educational policies, schooling practices, immigrant policies, and immigrant populations.

·       Italy has experienced mass immigration more recently than some other European countries and shares fascinating similarities and differences with the United States in terms of its immigration policy, immigrant population make-up, and the organization of educational systems and instruction for immigrant youth.

·       At the same time, Italy has been a leader in early childhood and elementary education. The Education study abroad class that has been taught at the Rome center several times will be used as a model for this class.

·       The present class as a whole will consist of instructor lectures, guest lectures (with experts on immigration and on schools), visits to organizations focusing on immigration and schools in Rome, and service learning opportunities at refugee centers and schools in Rome as well. It will also include a visit to Turin for students to visit schools and programs there and make a comparison to experiences in Rome.

·       Optional study group: The week before the program to Reggio Emilia, home of the Reggio schools, from March 22-27, 2014. This study group is designed specifically for small groups of graduate and undergraduate students and accompanying professors whose work with students at U.S. colleges and universities is influenced by the Reggio Emilia approach to education.  It fits well with short term faculty led study abroad programs, offering students practical international experience to support their corresponding academic coursework. The cost of this would be $1850 extra.
