Incaa Designs nonprofit has a position opening for a student familiar with Elan software and lexical transcription of speech. We are beginning a new project that is analyzing multimodal communication patterns (speech, writing, etc.) as students solve math problems. The goal of the project is to identify predictors of domain expertise. This project work represents a new area called “multimodal learning analytics,” which is related to big-data learning analytics.
The position is available either part- or full-time during May and June, and may continue over the summer for a capable student who is interested in performing their own analyses with the lexical or acoustic speech data and writing it up for an international workshop on multimodal learning analytics. The student intern would collaborate with another student currently working on digital pen data from the same dataset.
The ideal candidate would have a multidisciplinary profile of interests, Including some combination of linguistics, computer science, and cognitive and learning sciences. Experience with Elan, speech signal and lexical analysis, Excel, and data analysis software is required.
