Maya Smith will receive her Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Linguistics in the French Department at the University of California, Berkeley in spring 2013. Her dissertation, “Multilingual Practices of Senegalese Immigrants in Paris and Rome: A Comparative Study of Language Use and Identity Construction,” studies how immigrants create identities based on language ideologies and linguistic experiences. Her areas of specialization are Second Language Acquisition (SLA), Identity Studies, and Cultural Studies. Her article “Using Interconnected Texts to Highlight Culture in the Foreign Language Classroom” is forthcoming in L2 Journal.
